IRONWOMAN TEES UP TO WOMEN HELPING WOMEN by Gayle Bukowsky
Another successful IronWoman Ladies Golf Tournament benefitting South Okanagan Women In Need Society (SOWINS) was held July 24 at Twin Lakes Golf Club. A grand total of $11,000 was raised to assist SOWINS with their life-altering programs – $5,500 from the tournament itself and a further $5,500 in matching funds from an Anonymous Donor.
“We had another great tournament and are very excited that we almost doubled our contribution to SOWINS over last year.” said Gayle Bukowsky, Chair of the Planning Committee. “We couldn’t have done it without the tremendous support of so many businesses in this community, our major sponsor Skaha Hills, Twin Lakes Golf Course, our twelve hole sponsors and the Twin Lakes Monday Night Ladies Group who sponsored our hole-in-one.”
“SOWINS is so honored and grateful to be the annual recipient of the IronWoman Ladies Golf Tournament. Gayle and the women golfers not only support our Second Stage Housing Project financially, but fundamentally and philosophically as well.” said Debbie Scarborough, Executive Director of SOWINS. “Once our Second Stage Housing is acquired the women and children who benefit from the services will feel the support that these women and others give them to aid their choice to overcome abuse and violence; a choice to leave and reinvent their lives in safe, affordable housing”.
IronWoman is a challenging four-lady team tournament open to ladies of all skill levels who have an official handicap. Teeing off from the “tips”, winding their way through our very own “Amen Corner” and tricky hole placements make this a difficult 18-hole competition with a lot of fun thrown in to balance the day. Eighty-eight ladies participated this year from the Okanagan, Lower Mainland and Alberta.
Overall Low Gross: Denise Vines, Barb Gould, Shawna Dunkley and Beverley Suits from Shannon Lake Golf Club.
Overall Low Net: Sharon Daniels, Cindy Curtain, Lois Simpson and Sharleen Anderson from Princeton and Penticton Golf Clubs.
Next year the tournament will be on Friday, July 22, 2016.
