Employment Services Program Participants in 2016
The overall goal of this program is to assist women to Recognize, Understand and Overcome the Impacts of Abuse.
We do so by providing workshops focused on healing and life skills, as well as group and individual counseling. The Bridging Employment Program for Women began in 2009 to assist women to take their ‘next steps’ and move forward to employment, education or training and a life free of abuse and trauma.
In 2012, the Employment Program of British Columbia began and the Bridging Program transitioned to Specialized Services for Victims of Violence and Abuse. We are presently sub-contracted to both the YMCA, in Penticton, and the Open Door Group (ODG) in Oliver/Osoyoos, to provide these services. The YMCA and ODG provide most of our referrals. Self referrals and those from community agencies are also welcome.
Potential participants will be guided through an application process and meet with our liaison from the YMCA/ODG, as well as our services coordinator or the SOWINS Counsellor in Oliver/Osoyoos.
The program format: clients attend an intense six week (three days per week) series of healing and life skill workshops, as well as group and one to one counseling as needed and complete with a graduation at the end of the sixth week. Classes are held at SOWINS in Penticton with a new group starting every seven weeks (one week between groups) throughout the year.
