SOWINS PEACE Program is a free intervention and counselling program for children and youth ages 5-18 who have witnessed/experienced emotional, mental and/or physical abuse in their home. Support is also provided to the non-offending parent/caregiver. Our program offers children/youth a safe environment to share personal experiences and to learn healthy coping skills through individual one-on-one sessions or group sessions. Overall this program offers:
- individual counseling
- group sessions (age specific)
- support for parents and caregivers
- community education
- school presentations
Without intervention and support, children often grow up with unresolved feelings and without the necessary tools needed to heal from their trauma. Self referrals and agency referrals are welcome.
What is an intervention program?
The goal of this program is to stop the intergenerational cycle of abuse:
- by encouraging the expression of feelings, thoughts and experiences
- by teaching children heathy and safe ways to express their anger
- by teaching age appropriate problem solving and communications skills
Through individual or group sessions, children and youth are provided with a safe environment to learn and talk about:
- families
- separation and loss
- abuse
- self esteem
- safety planning
- anger
Children will understand they are not alone and are not at fault. The effects of family conflict on children and youth include:
- self blame
- low self confidence
- agressive behaviour
- depression
- fear and anxiety
- anger and distrust
- challenging peer relations
- lower school performance
